WACO, Texas - Stanford will be well represented in Sunday's semifinals.
The Cardinal continues to boast a strong presence at NCAA Championships, with three players still in contention in both singles and doubles.
Tested for the first time in four matches, Carol Zhao defeated UCLA's Chanelle Van Nguyen 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Zhao, who had surrendered only six games combined over her first three matches, is seeking to become Stanford's first NCAA singles champion since Nicole Gibbs in 2013 and 17th all-time (15 NCAA, 2 AIAW).
In doubles, Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay defeated Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will next face defending NCAA champion Maya Jensen and Erin Routliffe of Alabama.
Meanwhile, Zhao and Taylor Davidson dropped a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 decision to Florida's Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan. Ranked No. 2 nationally and seeded No. 2 in the tourney, Stanford's top doubles team finished the season 34-8 overall and 16-5 in duals, playing all its matches at the No. 1 spot. Capturing the Pac-12 title, Zhao and Davidson were named the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year, earning Stanford's first honor since Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey in 2006. It was their second doubles crown of the season, also winning the NCTC Classic in January.
