Named head women's coach for 2017 World Championships

STANFORD, Calif. - Greg Meehan, who is in his fifth year at the helm of the Stanford women's swimming team, will serve as head women's coach for Team USA at the 2017 World Championships as announced by USA Swimming on Thursday.

The 17th FINA World Aquatics Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from July 14–30, 2017. Dave Durden, the men's head coach at Cal, will lead the American men.

"Dave and Greg are two of the brightest coaching minds in the United States. They guided their athletes to incredible success in Rio and played a key role in Team USA winning 33 Olympic medals last summer," USA National Team Director Frank Busch said. "With their commitment to the team concept, I'm confident they will do a tremendous job leading the United States to continued excellence this summer in Budapest."

I appreciate the trust shown in me by National Team Director Frank Busch and the leadership within USA Swimming," Meehan said. "The post-Olympic year Worlds team is a wonderful blend of Olympic veterans and athletes making their first appearance on the world stage. I'm looking forward to working with these great athletes this summer as we lay the groundwork for Tokyo 2020."

Last summer, Meehan mentored three Olympians and one Paralympian, and served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Meehan worked extensively with Lia Neal, Simone Manuel and Maya DiRado, who combined to win nine medals (four gold). In addition, Stanford freshman Brickelle Bro qualified for the Paralympic Games in four events.

Also at the international level, Meehan has been an assistant with USA Swimming at the 2015 World Championships, 2014 Pan Pacific Championships and was as a manager for the United States team that competed in the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. 

In his first four seasons at Stanford, Meehan has coached 19 All-Americans to a combined 131 All-America honors. That includes seven national championship relays and eight individual national championships. Additionally, Meehan has mentored two Pac-12 Swimmers of the Year and two Pac-12 Newcomers of the Year.
