STANFORD, Calif. – Head coach
Mark Marquess won his 1,600
th career game at the helm of Stanford baseball as the Cardinal topped arch rival Cal, 8-4 at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday.
"It's special," Marquess said, "I've been very fortunate to be at one place all this time, which is great. But the coaches don't play, the players play. I've been very fortunate that we've had great players come here and I'm very proud of that. It's really about the players. There are so many that went into those wins, a lot of them sitting in the dugout here. I'm just very blessed, very fortunate."
Marquess is just the fourth head coach in NCAA Division I history to reach 1,600 career wins and the third to do so all at one school.
No. 20 Stanford (15-9) scored all eight runs in the fourth inning. The Cardinal had eight hits and sent 13 batters to the plate. Freshman
Daniel Bakst had two hits in the inning to extend his team-leading hit streak to 10 games.
Trailing 2-0, Bakst started the merry-go-round inning with a double to left. Senior
Alex Dunlap followed with a double to center to cut the deficit in half. Dunlap scored to tie the game when
Jack Klein beat out a potential inning-ending double play.

Maverick Handley drove in Klein, sophomore
Nico Hoerner drove in two,
Quinn Brodey pushed one through the left side to plate
Matt Winaker, and Bakst capped the rally with a two-RBI bloop single to right.
Cal, which had a two-run lead after scoring a pair on three hits in the top of third, scored two in the fifth to make it 8-4, but
Tyler Thorne,
Keith Weisenberg and
Colton Hock each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the victory for Marquess and the Cardinal.
NUMBERS…
Marquess has won 629 conference games, 154 games against Cal, 131 postseason games and 36 College World Series games, which includes two national championships (1987, 1988).
Freshman
Erik Miller made the start for Stanford and allowed two runs in 4.0 innings. Freshman
Will Matthiessen threw two innings in relief and allowed just two hits and surrendered two runs. Bakst finished 2-for-3 with a run, double and two RBI, while Dunlap also added a two-hit night with a pair of doubles. Handley was 1-for-2 with a run, RBI and two walks in just his second start of the season. In all, seven starters had a hit and eight different Cardinal scored the eight runs.
AND NOTABLES
Bakst's 10-game hit streak is the longest of the year for the Cardinal, the longest since Brodey had a 14-game stretch at the end of last season, and just the fifth 10+ hit streak for Stanford in the last three years … Tuesday's game does not count toward the Pac-12 standings.

Stanford hits the road for the first time since March 12. The Cardinal takes a trip to Los Angeles to take on USC, April 6-8. The games on Thursday and Friday can be seen on Pac-12 Networks.
